Need help for basic 1.0 on Olivetti m10
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello people,

firstly: I know, this is a NEC-forum... BUT:
I am am new to this topic, and need some advice. Maybe, somebody in this forum knows a solution:

I own a Olivetti M10, but I don't have a manual.

The one thing I found allready is, that this Olivetti is very similar also to the Tandy TRS80 Model 100 and to the NEC 8201a.

In the M10 manual on this site: oldcomputers.dyndns.org/p...g_toc.html
the chapters about the Olivetti-basic are missing, so I have tried the Basic language for NEC8201a and Tandy100. But some of the statements would not work on the M10. So all the programs provided by the club100 would not work...

e.g.:

On the NEC 8201a the statement is
locate x,y rint "testtext";

On the Tandy100 it goes like this:
print@ n, "testtext"

But I did not find a way to make this feature work on the Olivetti...

Does anybody know the correct statement and syntax for the M10? And which other of the statements/commands are different? Or even better: hasn't anybody got the missing chapters from the M10-manual?

many thanks
yours
Ron.

P.S.: The standard- Microsoft basic-reference is no help, since the questionable commands are not described there.

I'm sorry, Ron, but I haven't a clue regarding the syntax of Olivetti BASIC. I thought that the M-10 used the PRINT@ syntax, but since you've tried that already, I am at a loss...

I am forwarding your question to the Club 100 User Group mailing list, as there are probably at least a couple of Olivetti users on the list. If I get a reply, I'll repost it right here. Also, if you ever want to ask a question of the collective Model "T" community, the Club 100 mailing list is a fantastic group of people. You would send email to the following email address with the three "Q" letters removed: m100@list.QQQ30below.com
(I have to list it this way to prevent spammers from capturing that email address.)

Anyway I'll let you know if I get a response..

When in doubt . . . if the basic has "PEEK" I would write a program that looks through the rom for 'RINT' (don't use the first letter - it isn't always there). Once you find it, scan around that area looking for keywords. You'll find something like:-

(6(UTO*NDnBS.TN.
SC..SAVEBLOADCEE
PE.OLOR?LOSE;ONT
.LEAR.SRLIN[INT.
SNG.DBL.OS.HR$.A
LL3LS@.ELETE)ATA
.IM.EFSTR,EFINT-
EFSNG.EFDBL/EF..
LSE!ND.RASE%DIT&
RROR'RLTRRUXP.OF
#QVq.OR.NQRE.IX.
.OTO.O TO.OSUB..
EX$..NPUT.F.NSTR
XNT.NP.MPrNKEY$^
..EYI.OCATEJPRIN
T.LIST.POS.ET.IN
E0OAD<IST.OG.OC$
EN.EFT$.OF%.OTOR
AERGE=ODsID$..EX
T.EW.OTS.PEN:UT.
N.RoCT$.PTION8FF
].RINT.OKE.OS.EE
K.SETFRESETGOINT

These are the keywords in alphabetical order with the first letter missing (AUTO AND ABS ATN ASC....) and possibly the last letter altered also. You can reconstruct the keywords from this, and then all you need to do is figure out what each does. This works on most all Microsoft Basics.

Good suggestion, Neil!

By the way, the reason you don't see the first character is because of the way BASIC tokens are encoded in ROM. The first character of every token has the 8th bit turned on. All you have to do is strip off the 8th bit from what you are PEEKing, and you'll be able to display the ASCII character properly. (You'll actually see PRINT instead of .RINT).

They're encoded this way to save space in ROM. Since every first character of each token has the 8th bit turned on, that is the "start of token" marker and therefore they didn't need any type of string termination marker, like an zero byte.

Anyway, Ron, let us know if you've figured out the screen positioning information for your Olivetti. I've not yet been able to contact anyone else who has that machine.

CONFIRMED!!!

The Olivetti M-10 uses the PRINT@ syntax, just like a Model 100 does.

I just looked at a BASIC program that was written for the M-10, and it has PRINT@ statements all throughout.

Here's line 210 from the RFU10.BA utility, downloadable from the M100SIG file library:

210 PRINT@92,"RAM File Utility";:PRINT@170,"Olivetti Version 1.0";:PRINT@214,"for US M10";

So, I am confused as to why it wouldn't be working on your M-10.

What kind of error are you getting when trying to use a PRINT@n,"" statement?

Gary.

The same question was asked on the m100@list.30below.com list: "M10: the PRINT statement" originally started 7 september 2007 10:55

I quote directly my answer from the list. As to why this behaviour, we can talk about that ...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Try the character 'à' instead of '@', it's in the character table of the M-10 on place 64, just where the standard @ is supposed to be. Worked on my AZERTY M-10

Subject: M10: the PRINT statement

I have problems with the PRINT statement on my Olivetti M10.
I discovered that this statement don't accept '@' to start printing at a particular position on LCD. Unfortunately my M10 ignore the '@'.
Here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~fjkraan/comp/m10/m10quickref/p48.htm I see that the PRINT statement can start printing where I want... but not work.
If I try with:

PRINT 8, "Pino"

on the LCD (on the first line available) I see:

8 Pino

(1 space, the number '8', a TAB and the string 'Pino').

If I try with:

PRINT 8; "Pino"

I see:

8 Pino

(1 space, the number '8', 1 space and the string 'Pino').

Is this a bug in the ROM? Can you help me???
Pino

Jan,

Thanks for confirming this. I find it quite peculiar that in the Olivetti M10 they chose to change the ASCII character at position 64. I guess perhaps it must be how computers evolved in Italy.

I found some posts on a vintage computing forum where they were discussing the attempt at putting an M100 ROM into an Olivetti M10. It actually worked for the most part, except for the key mappings. I suppose one could change those mappings and burn their own standard 27C256 EPROM replacement chip (with appropriate chip carrier to rewire to the nonstandard pinout).

I've always wanted a flip-up screen for the Model 100, so personally I think it might be quite interesting to have a machine that was ROM-compatible with the M100 but in the elegant case & styling of the Olivetti M10!
